Poem: Misplaced Hope by ~rainmanjr:iconrainmanjr:

They're really lonely place$,
though people fill their chair$.
Mo$t $it in $ullen $ilence,
playing game$ of great de$ign.

The mo$t elaborate being in$ide their head.

Mo$t think it rather harmle$$,
but $ome would di$agree.
You'll find them now in meeting$,
room$ with $tale carpet$.

But they're not $trong like you and me.

$ometime$ it feel$ exciting,
thi$ game of ri$k and chance.
Happine$$ brought by winning,
families deve$tated by hope.

Crumb$ from $ugary $nack$ on the floor.

I'm not making judgements here. Just saying it's something to be wary of.

omg's :giggle: that's wonderful! and yes, something to wary of, indeed.

How did you come up with the idea for this? It's an usual thing to write poetry about. Interesting though.

It is unusual. I work in a casino (the famous Treasure Island ) on the day shift. It's really dead and boring in the mornings so, to keep myself from running into the street, I think about my book or write these poems.
Around 8 years ago my wife had a gambling problem. She went to G.A. (and a special clinical class given by the world's top expert on gambling addiction--Dr. Hunter) and I attended many meetings with her. She's never gambled since but hasn't gone to meetings in many years, now. Thankfully, I think her problem was more emotional than chemical (so just getting out of the habit was what she needed). So that experience made me attuned to the power, and destruction, of the addictive side. Incidentally, I haven't gambled since that experience, either. It scares the shit out of me. I don't even watch our customers as they play.

Ok I can see where you're coming from now.

I don't gamble at all - I think it's a waste of money - not thinking I stand a chance.
But I can see how you could become addicted to the rush of anticipation and possibility. Different people get their needs met in different ways I guess.

Alcohol filled a need for me when I was in my late teens - it seemed to be the thing to do - get drunk at every possible chance. Although I'm talking evenings - not all day drinking! But I grew out of it - that and suffering the most awful hangovers!

Yeah, me too. When I was in the Air Force, especially while waiting to be kicked out, I was drunk and/or high every night. Sometimes during the day, too. I began to wonder if I could stop, in fact. After leaving, I continued to drink, and get high, until 28. Then I stopped both for counseling and had no problem (though I missed :weed:).
I was lucky, though. I don't have the gene for alcohol. But, with gambling, you don't need the gene. It can happen rather easily without it.

Scary as all get out, gambling is.
I like the idea of the $s, but they are distracting until you realize what's going on.
